Health & Safety
01 Jan 2008
We would like everyone to dance in a safe environment. This means that we have some rules.
- Fit to Dance? Modern Jive is an athletic activity. You participate at your own risk and should consult your doctor if you have any doubt about your fitness.
- Lifts/Airsteps are not permitted. These are where both the lady's feet are above the guy's knee. Anyone doing this will be asked to stop.
- Drops are not permitted. These are where the lady's head is lower than the guy's waist. Anyone seen doing these will be asked to stop. You can do dips, these are not 'drops', so long as the lady is supporting most of her weight and her head is not below the guy's hip or anywhere it can come into contact with other dancers. NEVER do a dip unless you have discussed it with your partner in advance. Ladies, if you do not want to do dips you MUST tell your partner. Guys, please note that dips should leave the lady free to take her own weight. Do not bend the lady backwards.
- Jewellery. Do not wear jewellery, chunky watches or long necklaces. Simple wedding bands are ok.
- Strong Leads. If a person doesn't follow your gentle lead do not pull harder, just keep the tension the same.
- Floorcraft. Avoid collisions by looking where you are leading your partner. Her safety is your priority. When joining and leaving the dance floor avoid people already dancing as they have priority. Walk around the edge of the floor, do not cut corners or walk through the dancers.
- On the dance floor. Do not linger or coach on the dance floor. Apart from giving simple tips, the only people who can coach are teachers and crew members. Uninvited lessons should be avoided. Couples practising on a crowded dance floor are a hazard.
